Instructing Your Kids About the Ethical Use of AI
In a column published on 8/30 in the Daily Business Review, Family Law Attorney Rebecca Palmer cautions parents to discuss with their children the ethical questions of using AI to assist with their homework assignments. While tools such as ChatGPT have value when it comes to providing fast research for a paper and offering feedback on their writing, it’s a slippery slope to asking it to write entire assignments. In addition to these ethical concerns, overly relying on the technology may handicap students in learning the course material and weigh down their academic careers.
“As a parent, setting clear expectations for AI use limits in their studies is crucial,” Palmer writes. “Establish clear guidelines on when and how AI may be used for schoolwork, emphasizing that while AI itself can be a helpful tool, it should not replace genuine scholastic effort or write entire essays.”
Palmer also advises that parents collaborate with school administrators and teachers to understand their policies on AI use and ensure that their child’s use aligns with the school’s academic integrity standards. Parents must continue to model proper behavior for academia right alongside school personnel.
“As AI continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly become even more integrated into our daily lives,” Palmer says. “By teaching our children how to use AI ethically in educational settings, we can help them navigate this new landscape with integrity and responsibility.”
