Mental Health Awareness Month

May 27, 2014

The month of May is recognized globally as Mental Health Awareness Month to increase awareness about mental illnesses and available treatments. Because of the social stigmas associated with mental illness, the majority of people suffering from mental illnesses will not seek treatment. Depression is the most common mental illness and the number one cause of suicide. While depression is extremely common during a divorce, a divorce can significantly increase a person’s risk for suicide. Studies show that divorced people are three times more likely to die by suicide as people who are married. A strong support network is crucial when going through a divorce. If you are experiencing any signs of depression during your divorce, we encourage you to seek professional guidance from a counselor or psychologist immediately.
