Nurturing the Next Generation of Voters – National Voter Registration Day
In a column published on 9/18 in the Daily Business Review, family law attorney Rebecca Palmer advises that, for National Voter Registration Day, it is important to discuss the importance of voting with your children. If you have children over 18 on Election Day, National Voter Registration Day, and the days after, offer the perfect time to encourage them to register.
“Use this opportunity to stress the importance of being informed: encourage research on candidates and issues, understanding different platforms, watching debates, and considering the implications of various policies,” writes Palmer. “For younger children who aren’t yet of voting age, introduce them to democracy by creating a mock election at home, where they can vote on family decisions like choosing a movie for family night or picking the dinner spot.”
Palmer adds that it is important to discuss with your children not only the issues themselves, but also how some people continue to face obstacles when voting, such as long lines, strict voter ID laws, or limited polling places—which can all affect voter turnout. These discussions will help your children to better appreciate the importance of voting, universal access to polling locations, and civic engagement.
“Ultimately, the goal is to instill in your children the understanding that their participation matters,” Palmer says. “Whether they are voting for the first time or simply learning about democracy, involving them in this day and these discussions prepares them to be informed, engaged, and responsible citizens.”
