Rising Up: The Power of Women Standing Together During Difficult Times
In a column published on 3/27 in the Daily Business Review, Family Law Attorney Rebecca Palmer notes that Women’s History Month offers an opportunity to recognize pivotal women from history—and to also continue the fight for gender equality as disparities remain in leadership positions and access to opportunities. Additionally, Palmer shares that divorce can be incredibly challenging for women due to economic hardships, increased parenting responsibilities, and emotional stress.
“Women often experience a more significant drop in income post-divorce, particularly if they took career breaks for childcare,” Palmer writes. “I strive to help clients, employees, and friends ‘rise up’ and defend themselves against those who try to bring them down, ensuring that they emerge more assertive, more independent, and ready to move forward with their lives professionally and personally.”
Palmer says it’s crucial for women to lift one another up, particularly in fields such as law that have traditionally been male dominated. Mentoring is crucial to helping the next generation, which Palmer has demonstrated firsthand in her work with legal organizations such as the Central Florida Women Lawyers Association and the Orange County Bar Association board.
“Recognizing and uplifting women’s achievements benefits everyone, not just women, making this month a meaningful and exciting time,” she writes. “Let’s take a moment to honor the women who have lifted us up, recognize those who have paved the way, and commit ourselves to fostering environments where women are supported, encouraged, and given every opportunity to rise up and thrive.”
