Rebecca Palmer Discusses High Divorce Rates in Florida on Fox 35’s Good Day Orlando

RLP-Photo2Rebecca Palmer appeared on Fox 35’s Good Day Orlando again yesterday morning to discuss the correlation between geographical location and divorce rates. The American Community Survey published a report indicating that men and women in the southern parts of the United States have the highest divorce rates. In fact, it was reported that 4 of the top 10 cities in the nation with the highest divorce rates were right here in Florida.   Attorney Palmer’s research indicates that men and women tend to marry at a younger age in the South.  Younger couples often start families before obtaining their educational and career goals.  Starting a family before settling into a career can cause a great deal of financial strain on a marriage, and we all know that financial difficulties often lead to divorce.

Secondly, Florida is one of our great nation’s melting pots.  Many Florida residents migrate to Florida from other parts of the country leaving most of their social support systems behind. When these couples experience challenges in their marriages, they have fewer people to turn to for guidance and support through those difficult times in their marriages.

Where you live, your community and your culture can also have an impact on your views on divorce. Attorney Palmer shared that she was raised in Nebraska, in a community where divorces were scarce. In other geographical locations, however, divorce is more socially acceptable.

Regardless of where you live, if your marriage is facing troubling times, Attorney Palmer highly encourages marital counseling.  Local churches, synagogues, other religious establishments and community outreach programs are a great resource for affordable counseling options.  She suggests do not keep your marital issues bottle inside, but make sure to talk to someone who can help.
