Splitting Up the Twins? What Unusual Custody Agreements Mean for Children

September 20, 2013

Timesharing and custody issues represent a substantial portion of domestic law cases.  Many times, parents are able to make decisions based on the best interests of their children.  Sometimes, however, parents cannot agree on what the best interests really are and sometimes, the acrimony between the parties is so great that children’s issues are largely overshadowed by each party’s own needs, egos and goals to “get even”.  Parents have the duty to place their personal issues aside and truly work towards a resolution that will serve best for their children, as timesharing schedules will impact their children’s lives forever.  In addition, parties who are severing their relationship ties with one another must learn to build a new “business-type” relationship with their former partner for the sake of their children.  This rebuilding and redefining  takes time and real effort. As parties contemplate timesharing and related issues, it may be best to consult with a professional, such as a psychologist, family or children’s therapist, for example.
