Tips For Single Parents as Summer Ends and School Begins
In a column published on 8/12 in the Daily Business Review, Rebecca Palmer provides back-to-school family law tips and advises single parents on combating “summer learning loss.” Establishing a routine is critical for getting back to school, particularly when it comes to setting consistent bedtimes and study periods for when the children get home and must focus on their studies, she writes.
“Another way to get your kids excited about going back to school is to update their study area. Start by designating a specific area for studying that is free from distractions,” Palmer writes. “Involve your children in the preparation process by taking them shopping for school supplies and letting them choose their own items. Preparing school lunches together can also be a fun activity that promotes responsibility and healthy habits while giving children something to look forward to during their school day.”
Palmer also advised that parents regularly encourage their children to discuss their feelings about their classes, classmates, and their teacher’s expectations. It is crucial to work with your ex-spouse to ensure your children achieve a balance between school and fun so they can be academically successful and reduce the stress of living in two separate homes.
“Remember to take care of yourself. Single parenting is like being a superhero without a cape, and even superheroes need rest,” Palmer advises. “Connect with friends and family, and don’t hesitate to seek professional help if needed. … Taking care of your well-being enables you to be more present and supportive of your children.”
