With Political Division, It’s Imperative to Keep Children Out of It
In an article published October 30, 2026, in the Orlando Sentinel, Family Law Attorney and Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator Rebecca L. Palmer discusses why children should not be pulled into political conflict between parents. The article offers practical guidance for divorced and separated parents navigating disagreements while protecting children’s emotional well-being, stability, and relationships with both parents.
“Children need permission to form their own views in their own time,” Palmer writes. “They also need to know that they can care about both parents without becoming a messenger, referee or witness to anger.”
Palmer explains that Florida family courts focus on a child’s best interests, including safety, stability, healthy relationships, and each parent’s ability to meet the child’s needs. She encourages co-parents to avoid disparagement, keep adult political debates out of parenting communications and exchanges, and establish clear boundaries around age-appropriate news, events, and online content.
“Mediation can often help parents move from proving a point to solving a problem,” Palmer writes. “Strong beliefs will not be erased, but boundaries can be created that let children remain children and avoid being part of political arguments.”
