Pride Month – Celebrating Universal Rights

Just in time for Pride Month! Rebecca Palmer authored an article published on 6/28 on the front page of Daily Business Review. The column highlights the challenges of same-sex divorces, given the ambiguity of same-sex marriage laws prior to 2015. Since many couples were in civil unions or domestic partnerships before 2015, divorces can be tricky to handle with issues such as common assets, child custody, and retirement money.

“Even though Florida’s governing statutes apply parenting rights and responsibilities equally to same-sex parents, some same-sex couples may face challenges for child custody and parental rights when a child is adopted or born to one of the individuals,” writes Rebecca. “As with all separations, an agreed-upon parenting plan will help reduce stress and disagreements by creating a stable schedule and putting the focus on what is in the best interest of the child.”
