Many people believe when their divorce is entered, they have severed all financial ties to their ex-spouse other than those obligations determined by their Final Judgment. However, this is not necessarily the case! Some issues such as credit cards, third party contracts, life insurance, wills, trusts and retirement funds need to be further reviewed and addressed individually, separate and apart from the Final Judgment. Don’t rely on your Final Judgment to carry out all of your intentions as some conflicting documents may result in an unintended windfall to your former spouse. Consult with your attorney to determine what additional steps you may need to take and consider speaking with a probate attorney to create or revise your Will, as well as, a financial advisor regarding your retirement funds.
